NLC India Ltd announced on Sunday that its renewable energy arm has won a contract from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) to set up large-scale battery energy storage systems. This marks NLC India Ltd’s (NLCIL Group) first major venture into standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
According to a regulatory filing with the BSE, NLC India Renewables Ltd — a fully owned subsidiary of NLCIL — received a Letter of Award (LoA) from TNGECL to develop three independent BESS installations. These projects will collectively offer a storage capacity of 250 MW/500 MWh and support two complete charge-discharge cycles per day for flexible power delivery.
The projects are to be executed under a build-own-operate (BOO) framework with financial support through viability gap funding. The contract was secured through a competitive bidding process. NLC India Ltd recently posted a consolidated net profit of ₹468.46 crore for the fourth quarter of FY25 — more than four times higher than the same period last year.
NLC India Ltd is a Navratna Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Established in 1956, the company is primarily engaged in lignite mining and thermal power generation.
