NLC India Inks Landmark MOU with Rajasthan for Thermal and RE Push

NLC India Ltd has formalized an MOU with the Government of Rajasthan, marking a significant milestone in their partnership to advance both thermal and renewable energy initiatives. The MOU details plans for a joint venture between NLC India Limited and RVUNL, focusing on the development of a 125 MW Lignite power plant and a 1000 MW solar power plant.

NLC India Ltd, formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited, is a leading public sector enterprise in the energy sector, specializing in lignite mining and power generation. Founded in 1956, the company has grown to become one of the largest lignite producers in India and a significant player in the power generation industry.

NLC India operates several lignite mines and thermal power stations in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, contributing significantly to India’s energy security. Known for its commitment to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility, NLC India has undertaken various initiatives to promote renewable energy and environmental conservation, reflecting its vision of being a socially responsible energy company.

This ambitious project is estimated to require an investment exceeding Rs 7,000 crore, according to an official statement. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlines several key initiatives, including the establishment of a 125 MW Lignite Pit-head Thermal Power Plant in Bikaner district and a significant 1,000 MW Solar Power Plant.

These projects underscore NLCIL’s strong commitment to advancing renewable energy efforts. Additionally, a Letter of Limitation (LOL) has been issued for an 810 MW solar power plant, aligning with NLC India’s corporate strategy to become a leading player in the power sector, aiming for a capacity of 17 GW by 2030, with more than 6 GW coming from renewable sources.

The MOU was formally exchanged in the presence of notable individuals such as Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD of NLC India Ltd, and Devender Singhvi from RVUNL, marking a collaborative step towards ensuring energy security. In addition to the previously mentioned initiatives, several MOUs were signed with prominent entities including Coal India Ltd, NTPC, PGCIL, and REC, with a key focus on expanding generation capacity, improving transmission systems, and securing financial support.

Prahlad Joshi, the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines, lauded the visionary leadership of both PM Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for their efforts in accelerating these transformative projects. He emphasized that the realization of these projects was a direct result of their proactive approach.

Amrit Lal Meena, the Coal Secretary of the Government of India, shared similar sentiments of optimism and expressed confidence in the capabilities of PSUs under the coal ministry. He highlighted that with the support provided by the Rajasthan government in terms of infrastructure and land, these projects will make a significant contribution to enhancing the nation’s energy security.
