Denmark-based NKT, a manufacturer and installer of power cables, is expanding its operations in India by opening a new office in Chennai. As of the end of Q2 2024, NKT has successfully increased its order backlog for high-voltage projects to €11.3 billion and is investing over €1 billion in its high-voltage business in Europe to address the rising demand for power cables.

Since 2019, NKT has been actively bolstering its operations in India to tap into the local talent pool and introduce its expertise, particularly in offshore wind energy and interconnector projects. The company now employs more than 165 skilled professionals, mainly engineers, and has established offices in Gurugram, Chennai, and Mumbai.

“We are pleased to expand our presence in India by growing our talent base and enhancing our team’s contributions across the value chain for significant projects and tenders. With our increased competencies and footprint in the region, NKT is well-positioned to become a leading supplier of power cable solutions for upcoming renewable energy projects in India, such as offshore wind and interconnectors,” stated Claes Westerlind, president and CEO of NKT.

The company plays a vital role in the green transition by providing high-quality power cable technology. The company designs, manufactures, and installs low-, medium-, and high-voltage power cable solutions that facilitate sustainable energy transmission. Over the past ten years, it has been awarded more than 50 offshore wind projects, solidifying its status as a prominent provider of power cable solutions in the offshore wind sector.

The new Global Competence Centre (G3C) in Chennai is strategically positioned in Tamil Nadu, one of the two Indian states identified as having significant potential for offshore wind energy. This centre will provide technical services, including tender and project execution for NKT projects globally, in preparation for future opportunities. Meanwhile, NKT’s current commercial activities in India, including power cable accessories, are coordinated from the Gurugram office.
