NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) has solidified its strategic alliances with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd (GSPC) and Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd (GPPL) during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar. The summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had provided a pivotal platform for developing crucial partnerships in the sustainable energy sector.
Established on October 7, 2020, NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd. (NTPCREL)is a fully owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, one of India’s largest Power Utility. The formation of NTPCREL is strategically aligned with the goal of propelling the growth of renewable energy within the company while expanding its green footprint across India, offshore locations, and beyond borders. NGEL is set to contribute the renewable energy landscape with 3.4 GW of operating capacity and an impressive pipeline of 26 GW, which includes 7 GW currently under implementation.
NTPCREL has embarked on multiple initiatives, undertaking substantial Solar, Wind, and Hybrid Projects on a national scale. The company is actively involved in developing Gigawatt-scale Renewable Energy Parks and Projects in various states, leveraging the UMREPP (Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park) scheme initiated by the Government of India. Complementing these efforts, NTPCREL is also delving into Green Hydrogen-based Mobility projects and undertaking ventures in the realm of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG).
GSPC, known for its presence in India’s gas trading industry, is also one of the key players in the exploration, development, and production of natural gas and oil. Beyond its role in gas trading, GSPC has embraced a multifaceted approach towards sustainable energy solutions.
Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd is India’s inaugural Private Port developed through the Public-Private Partnership model. This all-weather port features deep draught capabilities and dedicated infrastructure for diverse cargo types, including containers, bulk, liquid bulk, and RORO cargo. Positioned strategically, the port facilitates seamless connectivity to major shipping lines serving India’s foreign trade.
The formalization of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NGEL and GSPC is a moment of accomplishment for both the companies at the summit. Dignitaries present at the ceremony included Shri Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC, Shri Milind Torawane, MD, GSPC, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the Minister of Finance, Energy & Petrochemicals, GoG, Dr V K Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, along with other senior officials and international delegates. This strategic MoU aims to integrate Green Hydrogen into GSPC’s gas networks and implement Green Hydrogen mobility through filling stations across Gujarat.
Another pivotal MoU was inked between NGEL’s GM-Hydrogen and GPPL’s APM Terminals MD, Pipavav. This collaboration focuses on establishing a robust Green Hydrogen ecosystem and producing Green Ammonia on GPPL land for both export and domestic markets. Additionally, the partnership aspires to position Pipavav Port as NGEL’s exploration, development, and operation hub for offshore wind farms in Gujarat.
This collaboration signifies a pivotal step towards the integration of green technologies into Gujarat’s energy infrastructure. The foray into Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia aligns with the global shift towards sustainable energy alternatives and underlines the commitment of both NGEL and GSPC to contribute to the green energy revolution.
The exploration, development, and operation of offshore wind farms by NGEL at Pipavav Port further accentuate the potential of Gujarat in becoming a hub for renewable energy ventures. The synergy between NGEL, GSPC, and GPPL exemplifies the collective efforts towards achieving energy sustainability goals and fostering innovation in the green energy sector.
