Commercial operations began this evening at the new terminal of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport, increasing annual passenger capacity to 13.1 million. The expansion strengthens Guwahati’s role as the main aviation hub for India’s North-East and improves links with major domestic destinations as well as South and Southeast Asia.
The launch followed a staged rollout, including operational trials across check-in, baggage handling, security screening and aircraft turnaround. The terminal had been formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 December 2025.
The first day of operations was attended by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. A ceremonial boarding pass was presented to the first departing traveller, while an Akasa Air flight from Mumbai marked the first arrival at the facility. Cultural performances and a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony in the arrivals area highlighted Assam’s heritage and community participation.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new terminal would strengthen tourism and economic activity in the state while reflecting Assam’s culture in its design. Jeet Adani noted that the expansion responds to rising passenger demand and supports long-term regional growth.
Guwahati has seen steady traffic increases over the past decade and is now among the country’s busiest non-metro airports. With passenger numbers crossing nine million in recent years, the added capacity provides room for new routes, higher flight frequencies and expanded international services. The airport currently connects 21 domestic cities and three overseas destinations—Bangkok, Paro and Singapore—and manages more than 130 aircraft movements daily.
System readiness exercises included airline coordination, ground handling procedures, emergency planning and digital integration. Digi Yatra processing, centralised communication tools and improved passenger navigation systems are in place, while retail and dining services will open in phases.
Designed by architect Nuru Karim, the terminal reflects regional identity through motifs inspired by the kopouphool orchid and extensive use of bamboo sourced from the North-East. An amphitheatre-style arrivals area introduces visitors to local art and performances. The design received the International Architecture Award 2025. The airport is operated by Guwahati International Airport Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, which manages several major airports across India and continues to expand infrastructure and connectivity nationwide.
