National e-Governance Division Organized a Session on 'AI/ML Applications’

In alignment with the Digital India vision, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is actively advancing the integrated and standardized approach to digital governance through the Capacity Building Scheme managed by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). As part of this initiative, NeGD, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, organized a two-day training program titled ‘Applications of AI/ML,’ which took place from August 08-09, 2024.

The event was officially inaugurated by the distinguished chief guest, G. T. Venkateshwar Rao, IRS (Retd.), former Principal Commissioner of Income Tax. The program attracted 26 participants hailing from various regions, including New Delhi, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, and West Bengal, who gathered at the IIM M campus in Visakhapatnam.

During his inaugural address, Rao highlighted the paramount importance of developing the necessary infrastructure to support the seamless integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into existing governmental systems. He emphasized that as AI and ML technologies become increasingly vital in shaping the future of governance, it is equally crucial to safeguard data security and privacy.

The integration of AI and ML, he noted, holds immense potential for enhancing the government’s ability to anticipate citizen needs, streamline various administrative processes, and enable more informed, data-driven decision-making. The primary objective of this training program is to equip government officers with the knowledge and strategies required for the responsible and effective implementation of AI technologies.

This includes navigating the complex regulatory landscape, adhering to stringent ethical standards, and ensuring that AI practices remain explainable and compliant with existing privacy regulations. By fostering a deep understanding of these critical issues, the program aims to empower officials to lead and implement AI-driven initiatives with confidence and responsibility.

The Capacity Building Scheme under the broader Digital India Programme is designed to develop adequate and relevant capacities across all levels of government. It seeks to provide need-based training that enables officials to conceptualize, lead, design, and implement e-governance projects effectively. Through sustained and vigorous efforts, the scheme has reached a significant number of government officials across the country, equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge to drive digital transformation in public administration.

The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) is a key initiative under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology or MeitY, focused on driving the digital transformation of governance in India. Established in 2009, NeGD plays a pivotal role in implementing e-governance projects, enhancing digital infrastructure, and building capacities across government departments to ensure efficient, transparent, and citizen-centric services.
