Murata Manufacturing Co, Ltd has begun mass production and shipments of a pioneering high-frequency filter based on XBAR technology—the first of its kind globally. Developed in collaboration with Resonant Inc., a Murata subsidiary, the filter integrates Murata’s advanced Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filter know-how with cutting-edge XBAR innovation, achieving both low insertion loss and high signal attenuation.

Designed to support next-generation wireless standards, the filter is engineered to meet the growing demand for high-frequency, interference-free communication in 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7, and the future 6G ecosystem. As frequency bands climb higher to support faster data transfer and greater bandwidth, conventional filter solutions such as LTCC and standard BAW structures face performance limitations.

Murata’s XBAR-based filter addresses these challenges by delivering robust signal clarity and minimizing power loss. Its unique architecture features comb-shaped electrodes and a piezoelectric single-crystal thin film, enabling bulk acoustic wave excitation. This approach delivers enhanced interference rejection, particularly in frequencies above 3 GHz, supporting clearer data transmission and better overall wireless performance.

The device operates within a 5150–7125 MHz passband and offers a typical insertion loss of 2.2 dB and a return loss of 17 dB. It provides excellent out-of-band rejection, with attenuation figures of 11 dB (4800–5000 MHz), 28 dB (3300–4800 MHz), 27 dB (7737–8237 MHz), and 26 dB (10300–14250 MHz).

Target applications include smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, and wireless access devices. Compact and cost-effective, the new filter supports enhanced connectivity in space-constrained designs. Murata plans to expand the capabilities of this platform in future products, with designs optimized for even higher frequencies beyond 10 GHz.

With a global footprint in materials science, electronic components, and system integration, Murata continues to lead innovation in high-performance wireless technologies, enabling the next era of digital communication. Murata continues to develop high-performance passive components to meet the evolving needs of automotive and consumer markets. The company’s ongoing innovation in materials and component design reflects its commitment to advancing reliable, high-frequency communication across industries.
