Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has commissioned a state-of-the-art bitumen production unit in Mangaluru, utilizing the innovative ‘Biturox’ technology from an Austrian firm. The new facility boasts an annual production capacity of 1,50,000 metric tonnes, effectively doubling MRPL’s bitumen output.
This development positions the company as a key contributor to India’s highway infrastructure growth, a critical factor in the nation’s economic development. The unit is engineered to consistently produce premium VG40 bitumen and offers flexibility to manufacture VG30 and other grades to meet diverse industry needs, according to MRPL Executive Director (Projects), BHV Prasad.
India’s growing highway network has historically relied on imported bitumen to meet demand. To address this challenge, MRPL launched its expansion project in 2022, leading to the creation of this advanced production facility.
With the plant now operational, MRPL aims to supply high-quality, locally manufactured bitumen to road construction companies, aligning with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Developed in collaboration with Engineers India Limited (EIL), the facility represents a milestone for MRPL and the nation’s infrastructure sector.
“This new unit exemplifies our commitment to delivering top-grade bitumen for durable and sustainable road networks,” Prasad stated, highlighting it’s role in supporting India’s progress. Strategically located in Mangaluru, the plant is expected to meet the rising demand for bitumen in road construction, reduce reliance on imports, and contribute to building resilient infrastructure nationwide.
