The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi successfully wrapped up the third edition of its flagship outreach programme, PRAYAS 3.0, with a closing ceremony on campus. The month-long initiative was designed to spark interest and enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among school students from various parts of the country. Selected participants had the rare opportunity to stay at IIT Mandi and learn through a blend of theory and hands-on experience in a real research environment.
Throughout their stay, students attended engaging workshops, classroom lectures, and lab sessions. Activities included introductory programming, circuit-building, mechanical design tasks, and group projects aimed at simplifying complex concepts. One of the most talked-about events was the Robo Soccer competition, where teams built and coded robots to compete in friendly football matches. For many, it was their first real exposure to robotics—and it left a lasting impression.
A student mentor shared that the sheer joy on the children’s faces as they watched their robots move and respond was unforgettable. “Many of them had never seen or handled a robot before. Watching them control their own creations was a powerful moment.”
Dr Tushar Jain, Head of the Centre for Continuing Education at IIT Mandi, addressed the students during the valedictory function. He highlighted the significance of introducing STEM concepts early in a student’s academic life. “PRAYAS is our effort to sow the seeds of curiosity. We hope this experience stays with them for a long time and encourages them to approach learning with confidence and wonder,” he said. He also noted that real-world exposure to coding, engineering design, and research labs helps remove the fear and mystery around science and technology.
As the program concluded, students were awarded certificates in recognition of their participation and achievements. PRAYAS 3.0 not only strengthened their understanding of core STEM areas but also gave them the confidence to explore careers in fields they hadn’t considered before.
IIT Mandi, one of India’s second-generation IITs, is located in Himachal Pradesh’s scenic Kamand Valley. It is one of the eight new IITs established by the Government of India and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. Since its launch, the institute has shifted all undergraduate students to its permanent campus and has grown rapidly in academics and research.
The institute now operates from two adjoining campuses—North and South—connected by a narrow ridge and situated along the Uhl River. Since beginning operations, IIT Mandi has handled over 275 research projects worth ₹120 crore and established partnerships with 11 global and 12 Indian universities. With initiatives like PRAYAS, IIT Mandi continues to blend academic excellence with social responsibility, reaching out to young minds and encouraging them to explore the frontiers of science and innovation.
