The Renewable Energy Ministry has released guidelines to provide incentives for green hydrogen producers under the SIGHT scheme. These guidelines, part of Tranche-II of the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) program, were announced on July 3, 2024.

The second phase aims to produce 450,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Out of this, 40,000 tonnes per year is reserved for biomass-based methods, while the rest is open to all technologies.

Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will handle the implementation. SECI will soon issue a Request for Selection (RfS). The bidding process will focus on the lowest average incentive quoted by bidders. The minimum bid for technology-agnostic methods is 10,000 tonnes per year, with a maximum of 90,000 tonnes. For biomass-based methods, the minimum is 500 tonnes per year, with a maximum of 4,000 tonnes. A bidder can bid in either or both categories, but the maximum a single bidder can be awarded is 90,000 tonnes per year.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with a budget of Rs 19,744 crore until FY 2029-30, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy and inspire global energy transitions. The mission will help reduce the economy’s carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels, positioning India as a leader in green hydrogen technology and market.
