Mitsubishi Electric Opens New Air Conditioner and Compressor Manufacturing Plant in Chennai

manufacturing news

Mitsubishi Electric India has inaugurated a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant expansion of its manufacturing presence in India. The facility was inaugurated through a virtual plaque unveiling by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, in the presence of the Hon’ble Consul General of Japan, Muneo Takahashi.

Developed with an investment of approximately ₹2,100 crore, the Chennai plant reflects Mitsubishi Electric India’s long-term commitment to the country’s manufacturing ecosystem. It is the company’s second production facility in India in just two years, following the commissioning of its Factory Automation Systems plant in Pune in 2023, and represents a key milestone in Mitsubishi Electric’s 15-year operations in the Indian market.

Spread across 210,000 square metres, the facility has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 650,000 compressor units. The project is expected to generate over 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities while strengthening the regional supplier base through increased local sourcing, technical capability development, and skills training aligned with global manufacturing standards.

The facility supports the Government of India’s Make in India initiative by enabling domestic production of room air conditioners and compressors—components that have traditionally relied on imports. By localising manufacturing, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to reduce import dependence and contribute to the development of a resilient, self-reliant HVAC manufacturing ecosystem.

Designed in line with evolving energy-efficiency norms, the locally manufactured products are expected to support India’s sustainability and climate objectives, particularly as demand for cooling solutions continues to rise. Built on Mitsubishi Electric’s Japanese manufacturing principles, the plant integrates digitally enabled, data-driven processes to ensure consistent quality, safety, and operational efficiency.

With a strong emphasis on responsible manufacturing, the facility incorporates measures to optimise resource usage, minimise waste, and ensure a safe and inclusive workplace, reinforcing Mitsubishi Electric’s commitment to sustainable growth in India.
