Mitsubishi Electric India Launches Lake Restoration Project to Support Climate Resilience and Water Conservation

manufacturing-news

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Mitsubishi Electric India has introduced a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at restoring lake ecosystems and promoting climate resilience. Developed in partnership with Earthwatch Institute India, the program focuses on conserving waterbodies and supporting biodiversity in Talegaon Dabhade and Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, as well as Pulicat near Chennai.

This long-term project addresses both ecological restoration and community engagement. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 13 – Climate Action), reflecting Mitsubishi Electric India’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By combining conservation efforts with public education and grassroots involvement, the initiative is designed to strengthen the relationship between people and nature.

Key actions under the program include training 25 local Self-Help Groups—comprising women and fisherfolk—as Lake Stewards to lead on-ground conservation. Tree plantations around the lakes will help control erosion and improve local air quality. Efforts are also underway to re-establish habitats for native species and improve the ecological balance of these wetlands. The project incorporates school programs and citizen science initiatives to raise awareness on water health, sanitation, and climate impact. Educational tools such as digital field guides and interactive workshops will be introduced to foster scientific understanding among communities and students.

“Our goal is to restore essential ecosystems while encouraging communities, especially youth, to adopt environmentally responsible practices,” said Atsushi Takase, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India. “Improving access to clean air and water while protecting green spaces reflects our broader goal of building a sustainable future.”

Raghuvansh Saxena, CEO of Earthwatch Institute India, added, “Wetlands act as natural buffers against climate extremes. Their preservation depends not only on science, but on active public engagement. This initiative brings together education, community leadership, and ecological restoration.”

The program is scheduled to run through March 2026, combining environmental work with outreach and collaboration across stakeholder groups. Mitsubishi Electric India continues to support initiatives that create lasting environmental and social impact, contributing to healthier ecosystems and more informed communities.
