Microchip Technology has expanded its TrustMANAGER platform to better support compliance with evolving international cybersecurity regulations. As cybersecurity standards continue to address emerging threats, one of the main areas of concern is the outdated firmware in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which can expose significant security risks.
In response, Microchip’s updated TrustMANAGER now includes secure code signing, Firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) update delivery, and remote management of firmware images, cryptographic keys, and digital certificates. These enhancements help businesses meet the requirements of the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which demands stringent cybersecurity measures for digital products sold within the European Union (EU).
The CRA is aligned with cybersecurity standards such as the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) EN 303 645, which sets guidelines for consumer IoT devices, and the International Society of Automation (ISA)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62443 standards for industrial automation systems. The CRA is expected to set a global precedent for cybersecurity regulations.
Microchip’s ECC608 TrustMANAGER integrates with KudelskiIoT’skeySTREAM™ Software as a Service (SaaS), offering a secure authentication Integrated Circuit (IC) that stores, protects, and manages cryptographic keys and digital certificates. With the addition of FOTA services, the platform now enables businesses to deliver secure, real-time firmware updates to remotely address vulnerabilities and stay compliant with cybersecurity regulations.
Nuri Dagdeviren, corporate vice president of Microchip’s security products business unit, commented, “As cybersecurity regulations evolve, manufacturers of connected devices must implement secure mechanisms for firmware updates, lifecycle credential management, and efficient fleet deployment. By adding FOTA to the TrustMANAGER platform, we provide a scalable solution that eliminates the need for manual, costly infrastructure security updates. FOTA updates enable customers to save resources, meet compliance standards, and future-proof their products against emerging threats and evolving regulatory landscapes.”
Additionally, the Microchip WINCS02PC Wi-Fi® network controller module, which is part of the TrustMANAGER development kit, has received certification under the EU’s Radio Equipment Directive (RED) for secure cloud connectivity. RED sets strict standards for radio devices, including network security, data protection, and fraud prevention. Beginning August 1, 2025, all wireless devices sold in the EU must comply with RED’s cybersecurity provisions.
By integrating these advanced capabilities, TrustMANAGER—backed by keySTREAM—addresses critical challenges in IoT security, regulatory compliance, and device lifecycle management. The platform is designed for IoT device manufacturers and industrial automation providers. For more information, visit Microchip’s Trust Platform website.
The ECC608 TrustMANAGER is fully compatible with Microchip’s MPLAB® X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and is supported by the CryptoAuth PRO development board (EV89U05A) and the CryptoAuthLib software library. The Trust Platform Design Suite (TPDS) includes a use case example with onboarding educational steps and firmware code to enable the keySTREAM service with AWS® using the ECC608 secure element and a 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M4-based PIC32CX SG41 MCU along with the WINCS02PC Wi-Fi module.
