Microchip Technology and Hyundai Motor Group Assess Single Pair Ethernet for Next-Generation Vehicle Networks

manufacturing news

Microchip Technology has announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to evaluate the use of 10BASE-T1S Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) technology in future vehicle platforms. The joint effort focuses on advancing in-vehicle network architectures to support the growing complexity of modern mobility systems. As features such as Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), electrification and connected vehicle technologies become more sophisticated, automakers are seeking scalable and high-performance communication networks within vehicles.

Single Pair Ethernet enables data transmission over a single twisted pair of wires, allowing multiple devices to communicate efficiently while reducing the need for complex bridging across various communication protocols. This approach can simplify wiring layouts, lower system costs and improve overall network integration.

Under the collaboration, Hyundai Motor Group will work with Microchip to explore the integration of Microchip’s 10BASE-T1S solutions into upcoming vehicle platforms. The initiative includes access to engineering support and early-stage product samples to accelerate development and refine system performance. The technology is being considered for applications across electric vehicles, autonomous systems and broader smart mobility initiatives.

Matthias Kaestner, Corporate Vice President for Microchip’s automotive, data center and networking business, said the automotive industry’s shift toward software-defined vehicles is increasing demand for scalable and high-performance in-vehicle communication systems. He noted that Ethernet-based solutions can help reduce complexity and shorten development cycles.

Hyundai Motor Group stated that collaboration with Microchip will support its efforts to expand next-generation connectivity and accelerate the adoption of 10BASE-T1S technology in intelligent, connected vehicles.
