Michelin, a prominent player in tire technology, has revealed the winners of its first Michelin AI Challenge, aimed at promoting artificial intelligence (AI) innovation within the industry. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and Startup India, sought to foster entrepreneurship in India’s AI startup landscape while introducing participants to international best practices.

The award ceremony took place at IIT Delhi and featured distinguished guests, including Petros Sourmelis, Minister-Counsellor of the EU Delegation to India and Bhutan; Marie Khater, Deputy Head of the Regional Economic Department for India and South Asia at the French Embassy; Dr Ambica Rajagopal, Chief Data and AI Officer of the Michelin Group; and Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director of Michelin India.

During the event, ten startups showcased their innovative ideas, with Kogo.ai, Prophecy, and Zangoh.ai being honored for their exceptional contributions. These startups will have the chance to engage in strategic projects and receive mentorship from Michelin.

Their proposals were evaluated by a panel of Michelin AI data scientists, business leaders, product managers, and developers. Additionally, Michelin and DPIIT have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further support innovation and entrepreneurship, fostering an environment conducive to startup growth.

Dr Ambica Rajagopal emphasized the challenge’s objective to assist innovative startups in leveraging AI technologies to improve manufacturing processes, safety, and product quality while promoting responsible and ethical AI practices. Shantanu Deshpande highlighted Michelin’s commitment to India, showcased by the establishment of its AI headquarters in Pune and its collaborative efforts with the government through the MoU with DPIIT. Petros Sourmelis commended the challenge for enhancing AI capabilities and driving innovation, while Marie Khater recognized Michelin’s role in bolstering Indo-French partnerships in digital technologies.

The AI Challenge, which spanned 12 weeks, included outreach efforts, application processes, shortlisting, and mentorship phases leading up to September 2024. The finale featured presentations from the top 10 AI startups. The winning teams were awarded paid pilot projects from the company, with funding of up to INR 5 lakh each, along with access to global contracts and incubation support from the leadership.

DPIIT has been actively working to assist startups in the manufacturing sector, providing early-stage support and focusing on initiatives that bridge the gap between industry and startups. The department is dedicated to establishing incubators and programs led by industry experts to empower startups with innovative technologies and sustainable practices.
