Mehru Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Pvt Ltd, a key subsidiary of Quality Power Electrical Equipments Ltd (QPEEL), has signed a strategic technology co-development agreement with Hyosung T&D India Private Limited, the Indian arm of South Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries Corporation. The collaboration focuses on the joint development of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) instrument transformers, marking a major milestone in India’s electrical equipment manufacturing sector.
This partnership establishes Mehru as one of the first Indian companies to co-develop GIS instrument transformer technology for the global market. By combining Mehru’s manufacturing expertise in high-voltage instrument transformers with Hyosung’s leadership in compact, eco-friendly GIS solutions, the agreement aims to deliver internationally benchmarked components—designed and made in India.
The initiative directly aligns with the Government of India’s “Make in India” program and aims to reduce the country’s reliance on imported GIS components. It also strengthens India’s positioning as a credible global supplier in the rapidly expanding GIS segment.
“By bringing advanced GIS technology to Indian manufacturing, we are creating new opportunities for exports, enabling true self-reliance, and elevating India’s presence on the global map of transmission and distribution innovation,” said Bharanidharan Pandyan, Joint Managing Director of QPEEL.
Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is a compact and reliable alternative to conventional air-insulated substations. GIS is gaining popularity due to its reduced footprint, increased safety, and environmental advantages—including the shift to alternatives for SF₆ gas. With a projected global market growth rate of 7–8% CAGR through 2030, GIS is a key enabler of urban transmission, renewable energy integration, and grid modernization.
Historically, India has depended heavily on GIS imports from Europe, China, and Japan. This partnership will allow Mehru to diversify into the GIS product segment while leveraging Hyosung’s advanced know-how in eco-friendly gases and space-saving designs. Target applications include metro rail systems, offshore wind farms, data centers, and high-voltage transmission infrastructure in urban areas.
The agreement focuses on the co-development of GIS instrument transformers, with production and testing processes designed to meet stringent IEC/IEEE international standards. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Mehru as it expands its expertise beyond oil-filled and dry-type transformers, stepping into GIS-specific innovations to address the evolving needs of modern power systems.
By strengthening India’s role in the global GIS value chain, the partnership will support both domestic and international infrastructure projects. The first set of GIS instrument transformers is expected to be developed and launched within the next 12 months, positioning Mehru as a key contributor to advanced grid solutions.
