McLaren Automotive, known for its high-performance supercars, has appointed Atlas Copco as its official smart tooling supplier. Atlas Copco is a leader in industrial assembly tools and software solutions. Working together, McLaren and Atlas Copco have upgraded McLaren’s manufacturing and engineering processes at the McLaren Production Centre (MPC). The new technologies from Atlas Copco have been smoothly integrated into McLaren’s existing systems.

McLaren has also introduced over 150 of Atlas Copco’s battery-powered digital tools, including the ITB and SRB ranges. These 5G-capable wireless tools are connected to Atlas Copco’s Power Focus 8 controller, which can manage up to 20 tools, creating a fully connected and efficient production environment.

Atlas Copco’s Smart Integrated Assembly system uses AI and machine learning to provide real-time data insights, helping to prevent production issues before they occur. The partnership will also automate McLaren’s bodyshell adhesive application, using Atlas Copco’s advanced adhesive dispensing and 3D laser profiling systems to improve efficiency and accuracy in assembly.

Matt Walton, Chief Manufacturing Officer at McLaren Automotive, said, “We have quickly implemented smart applications and new machinery into our production lines while maintaining our hand-built approach.”

James McAllister, General Manager of Atlas Copco Tools and Industrial Assembly Solutions, added, “This partnership has created a cutting-edge smart factory at the MPC, a first in the UK. We are excited to support McLaren in its development.”
