State-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is set to acquire a majority stake in Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard PLC through a $52.96 million agreement. This strategic move aims to strengthen India’s maritime influence in the Indian Ocean region.
This marks MDL’s first expansion beyond Indian borders, signaling a significant step in its evolution from a domestic shipbuilder to a regional maritime leader with wider ambitions. Situated at the Port of Colombo, Colombo Dockyard PLC offers MDL a vital presence in a key shipping corridor, officials said.
Industry insiders note that MDL’s takeover of Colombo Dockyard will reshape shipbuilding and repair operations in the area. The company plans to bring new business opportunities to Colombo Dockyard from both local and international markets, focusing on ship repairs, upgrades, and new vessel construction.
The acquisition promises steady work in ship maintenance from South Asia, and MDL’s involvement is expected to boost this trend. This development comes amid Indian concerns over China’s growing strategic moves in Sri Lanka.
Colombo Dockyard PLC, Sri Lanka’s largest shipyard and a publicly traded company, serves a diverse client base across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The investment will be funded through a combination of fresh capital and the purchase of existing shares, including those held by the current majority owner, Onomichi Dockyard Co Ltd. Several prospective contracts currently being negotiated by MDL could be redirected to Colombo Dockyard, helping to build a connected supply chain and stronger industrial ties between the two entities.
Both shipyards bring decades of experience to the table, which can be pooled for shared growth and mutual gains. For example, their advanced design expertise can support projects at both locations. Colombo Dockyard, which has faced financial difficulties, stands to benefit from MDL’s robust financial health, potentially accelerating its recovery. MDL’s resources may also help expand operations at Colombo Dockyard and its affiliated ports, based on emerging opportunities.
