This marks MDL’s first expansion beyond Indian borders, signaling a significant step in its evolution from a domestic shipbuilder to a regional maritime leader with wider ambitions. Situated at the Port of Colombo, Colombo Dockyard PLC offers MDL a vital presence in a key shipping corridor, officials said.
Industry insiders note that MDL’s takeover of Colombo Dockyard will reshape shipbuilding and repair operations in the area. The company plans to bring new business opportunities to Colombo Dockyard from both local and international markets, focusing on ship repairs, upgrades, and new vessel construction.
The acquisition promises steady work in ship maintenance from South Asia, and MDL’s involvement is expected to boost this trend. This development comes amid Indian concerns over China’s growing strategic moves in Sri Lanka.
