Maruti Suzuki India (MSI), the passenger car manufacturer from India, has taken a significant step toward bolstering skill development by entering into an agreement with the Haryana government to establish the state’s second Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM). Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), a subsidiary of Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation, is one of the foremost producers of passenger cars in India, dealing in both manufacturing and the sales of passenger vehicles across India. The upcoming institute, slated to be situated in Kansala, Haryana, is expected to commence operations next year.
The existing Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Kansala will undergo a transformation into a JIM with an investment of 5.8 crores, as revealed in a statement from the automaker. The Haryana government has facilitated this initiative by providing the necessary land and building for the JIM in Kansala. Maruti Suzuki India, in turn, will contribute equipment, training modules, skilled instructors, and manage the institute for the next 15 years.
Rahul Bharti, MSI’s Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, emphasized the burgeoning status of India’s passenger vehicle industry, now ranking as the world’s third-largest and continuously expanding. In response to this growth, Bharti underscored the imperative to cultivate a workforce capable of matching the industry’s manufacturing capacity. The establishment of JIMs serves as a strategic measure to bridge this gap. Bharti noted that as India’s passenger vehicle industry continues to surge, it is the collective responsibility of industry players to cultivate human capacity in tandem with manufacturing capacity to meet the escalating demand. By equipping the youth with skills aligned with industry requirements, Maruti Suzuki aims to contribute to the realization of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” or self-reliant India.
The vision to skill development and creating a robust talent pool is reflected in MSI’s existing initiatives, with three operational JIMs—one in Gujarat and two in Haryana. The decision to add a second institute in Rohtak aligns with Maruti Suzuki’s vision of proactively addressing the skill gap in the automotive sector. This endeavor is not merely about upgrading an institute but about fortifying the foundation for the country’s workforce, ensuring they possess the skills essential for a rapidly evolving industry. The 5.8-crore investment signifies the company’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art facilities and resources to nurture talent and foster a culture of continuous learning.
Skilling youth with industry-ready competencies is not just a corporate responsibility for Maruti Suzuki but a strategic move to empower individuals and contribute to the nation’s self-reliance goals. The emphasis on realizing an “Atmanirbhar Bharat” aligns with the broader vision of building a skilled and adaptable workforce that can navigate the complexities of an evolving automotive landscape. The addition of the second institute in Haryana demonstrates Maruti Suzuki’s vision to decentralize skill development and ensuring that regions with growing industrial significance have access to cutting-edge training facilities. As the automotive sector continues its trajectory of growth and transformation, investing in skill development becomes pivotal for sustained success and competitiveness.
