Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is ramping up its solar energy initiatives with two new projects that will add 30 megawatt peak (MWp) to its existing solar power capacity. The company has launched a 20MWp solar power plant at its new facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana, and added an additional 10MWp to its Manesar plant.

This expansion increases Maruti Suzuki’s total solar power capacity from 49MWp to 79MWp over the past year. The company says these efforts are part of a larger strategy to reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy and move towards cleaner, renewable sources.

Looking ahead, MSIL plans to scale up its solar capacity to 319MWp by 2030–31, backed by an investment of over ₹925 crore. The company also aims to raise the proportion of renewable energy in its overall electricity consumption to 85% by the same timeline.

Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi highlighted that this expansion aligns with both Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Environment Vision 2050 and India’s renewable energy goals. He further explained that as the company increases its production capacity to four million vehicles annually, it will similarly boost its use of sustainable energy.

The solar projects form part of MSIL’s wider environmental goals and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #7, which focuses on ensuring access to affordable and clean energy for all. India has emerged as one of the world leaders in solar energy, with significant growth in renewable energy capacity in recent years. As part of its commitments under the Paris Agreement, the country aims to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power by 2030, with solar energy being a key contributor.

The Indian government has actively supported this growth through initiatives like the National Solar Mission and production-linked incentives. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka have emerged as major hubs for large-scale solar installations, which contribute to reducing carbon emissions, improving energy security, and driving sustainable economic growth across the nation.
