MAHLE to Supply Key Components for MAN Truck’s Hydrogen-Powered Engine

MAN Truck & Bus has partnered with MAHLE to supply critical components for the hydrogen engine powering its award-winning ‘MAN hTGX’ truck, recently named the winner of the Truck Innovation Award 2025. The six-cylinder, 16.8-liter engine delivers 383 kW of power and features MAHLE’s hydrogen power cell unit. The unit includes pistons, piston rings, piston pins, and cylinder liners, along with additional valve train components.

The hydrogen-powered MAN hTGX is classified as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV), with plans to produce around 200 units starting in 2025 for select markets. Hydrogen combustion engines are seen as a key tool for decarbonizing the commercial vehicle sector, alongside electrification. MAHLE is at the forefront of this transition, developing cutting-edge engine components to ensure hydrogen-powered engines meet performance, efficiency, and durability standards.

Testing at its hydrogen center in Stuttgart demonstrates the maturity of its hydrogen engine technology, with solutions that minimize oil consumption and gas leakage into the crankcase, ensuring reliable and efficient engine operation.

The company is actively involved in nearly 30 hydrogen engine projects for on- and off-highway applications, underscoring hydrogen’s potential as a renewable fuel for decarbonizing transportation. MAN Truck & Bus’s adoption of MAHLE components marks a major milestone, with additional series production launches with other manufacturers expected in 2025.
