Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd has chosen ABB Robotics’ PixelPaint technology for its new electric vehicle (EV) paint facility. Mahindra will be the first in India to use PixelPaint for painting contrasting roofs and pillars, starting production in 2025.

PixelPaint uses over 1,000 tiny nozzles on an ABB robot to apply paint precisely, eliminating overspray and waste. This high-tech system removes the need for labor-intensive masking, making the process faster and more efficient. “Our PixelPaint technology applies large areas of color and tiny details accurately, without slowing down production or needing manual help,” said Joerg Reger, managing director of ABB Robotics Automotive Business Line.

“Mahindra’s paint shop can now use PixelPaint-equipped robots in dedicated cells to paint features like contrasting roofs and pillars on their new EVs, all automatically,” Reger added.

PixelPaint includes a paint head with over 1,000 small, individually controlled nozzles, mounted on ABB robots like the IRB 5500 paint series. With the increasing demand for personalized vehicles, PixelPaint gives Mahindra a significant edge in the luxury market. This partnership includes 42 robots from ABB’s IRB 5500 series.

PixelPaint automates complex tasks like interior painting and sealing, ensuring paint is applied accurately. ABB’s digital paint atomizers further improve efficiency, reducing paint waste by over 30 percent. This move strengthens Mahindra and ABB’s existing relationship and showcases Mahindra’s commitment to innovative, high-quality EV production.
