Magpet Polymers, India’s pioneering PET recycling enterprise, announced on Wednesday a ₹205 crore investment from British International Investment (BII), the UK Government’s development finance institution. This funding will accelerate the development of India’s largest integrated bottle-to-bottle food-grade recycling plant in Kharagpur, West Bengal.
The new facility, set up at Vidyasagar Industrial Park, will handle the entire PET recycling process, from collecting used bottles to producing food-grade recycled PET (rPET) pellets. With an annual capacity of 45,000 metric tonnes, the plant aims to meet the rising demand for sustainable plastic products while significantly reducing reliance on virgin plastics. The facility will employ advanced European technologies from Herbold, Coperion, and Polymetrix, marking their first use in India.
Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India, emphasized the significance of this partnership in advancing sustainability, noting that it showcases the potential for collaboration between the UK and India in trade, technology, and climate initiatives. He highlighted the plant as a global benchmark in sustainable plastic waste management and climate innovation.
Magpet Polymers Managing Director Devendra Surana expressed excitement over the collaboration with BII, noting that the investment will help scale sustainable practices and encourage wider adoption of recycled PET in India’s packaging industry, ultimately reducing plastic waste and carbon emissions.
