Global automotive supplier Magna has launched a manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra, focused on producing latches and mirrors for car manufacturers in western India. The 65,000 sq. ft. plant is anticipated to generate over 300 jobs within the next three years.
The facility was inaugurated by Jeff Hunt, President of Magna MML (Mechatronics, Mirrors, and Lighting), during a traditional ceremony that included a puja, ribbon-cutting, and plaque unveiling. “At Magna, our dedication to innovation and operational excellence enables us to adapt to the evolving demands of our customers, providing high-quality products that shape the future of mobility,” Hunt stated during the opening.
This new facility enhances Magna’s footprint in India, where the company currently employs 7,000 people across 14 manufacturing and assembly sites, along with five engineering, product, and sales offices. Magna’s expansion in Maharashtra coincides with a trend among global automotive suppliers to strengthen their presence in India to meet rising demand from car manufacturers.
The country’s automotive component industry reported a turnover of ₹5.6 trillion in FY23, according to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA). The Chakan industrial area, located near Pune, is home to several major automotive companies, including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Mahindra & Mahindra, making it an ideal location for automotive suppliers to establish manufacturing operations.
