Magellan Aerospace Corporation announced on Thursday that it has signed a preliminary agreement with Aequs Private Limited to explore setting up a sand casting facility within the Belagavi Aerospace Cluster (BAC) in Karnataka. The proposed joint venture, with equal stakes from both companies, aims to cater to the increasing sand casting requirements of the expanding aerospace industry, supporting both commercial and defense applications, according to Aequs Aerospace.
This marks the second collaboration between Aequs and the Canada-based aerospace manufacturer. Last year, the two companies entered into a similar agreement to establish an aircraft engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Karnataka.
These strategic partnerships reinforce the strong relationship between Aequs and Magellan, focused on delivering innovative solutions to serve a global clientele, the company stated. Magellan is recognized as a North American center of excellence for sand castings, leveraging advanced chemically bonded sand processes to create intricate casting geometries, Aequs noted.
Currently, India has a limited number of aerospace-certified NADCAP sand casting facilities. This proposed initiative aims to expand sand casting capabilities in Southeast Asia, strengthening the region’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
“Our collaboration with Magellan Aerospace to explore the establishment of a sand casting facility at the Belagavi Aerospace Cluster aligns with our mission to provide customers with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and solutions,” said Aravind Melligeri, Chairman and CEO of Aequs.
India’s aerospace sector has witnessed substantial growth over the past decade, driven by government policies such as Make in India and the UDAN Scheme, increasing private sector participation, and rising air traffic, the company highlighted.
“With the projected expansion in aerospace and aviation, this new sand casting initiative in India will emphasize infrastructure development, cost efficiency, capacity enhancement, and strategic advancements essential for the sector’s global success. Magellan is dedicated to fostering the growth of this critical manufacturing process in India,” said Phillip Underwood, President and CEO of Magellan Aerospace.
