Lumax Cornaglia, a key player in air intake systems, plastic fuel tanks, and urea tanks, is adapting its business strategy after Tata Motors, its main customer for plastic fuel tanks, shifted back to metal tanks for several models. To maximize the capacity at its Pune plant, the company is actively seeking new opportunities within its core areas of air intake systems, plastic fuel tanks, and urea tanks.

Industry experts suggest that the shift could be attributed to declining metal prices, although plastic materials continue to present compatibility challenges. However, with the upcoming implementation of CAFE II regulations, it’s expected that OEMs will eventually return to using plastics, according to experts.

Vikas Marwah, CEO of Lumax Autotech Technologies, explained that while metallic molds are preferred for fuel tanks, roto-molding remains essential for manufacturing vehicle exteriors and cabin structures. In electric three-wheelers (E3Ws), for example, there is a noticeable trend away from soft-top canopies in favor of hard-top plastic cabins—a change only made possible by roto-molding, which allows for the creation of large, durable plastic components.

Recognizing this opportunity, Lumax Cornaglia has expanded its application of roto-molding technology to vehicle cabin exteriors. The company has already signed new OEMs, including Mahindra, with production expected to begin within the next three to six months. The company has also reserved 40% of its production capacity for future growth, projecting that its roto-molding facility will operate at 60% capacity by 2026 as part of its long-term strategy.

In addition, Lumax is engaged in discussions with its joint venture partner about the possibility of becoming a global sourcing hub for certain products, leveraging Cornaglia’s international presence. Marwah further emphasized that plastic and urea tank manufacturing remains a specialized field in India, with only two significant players. The high barriers to entry—ranging from advanced technology requirements to stringent OEM approvals—mean that new entrants will take three to five years to establish themselves, giving Lumax Cornaglia a strong competitive edge and ensuring stable business prospects from 2025 to 2030.
