Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Tuesday that it has received a significant order from Hindustan Shipyard Ltd (HSL) for the construction of two Fleet Support Ships (FSS). L&T classifies orders between Rs 1,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore as significant.
The Precision Engineering Systems division of L&T will handle the construction of the ships. These ships are intended for the Indian Navy, which signed a contract with HSL in August last year to design and build five FSS.
Fleet Support Ships provide logistics and material support to naval task forces at sea. Each FSS will be over 220 meters long and have a displacement of about 45,000 tonnes, making them some of the largest vessels in the Indian Navy.
L&T will build the two FSS at its state-of-the-art shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai. This shipyard is the most modern in India, designed in-house and built with globally benchmarked technological practices. Both ships will be constructed concurrently.
Since entering the defense shipbuilding sector in 2010, L&T has designed, constructed, and delivered over 70 defense vessels, demonstrating its ‘Make in India’ capabilities. Most of these vessels have been delivered ahead of or on schedule. This project is part of the Indian Navy’s contract with HSL from August 2023 to design and construct five Fleet Support Ships.
