Larsen & Toubro’s (L&T) Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division has won significant contracts in the Middle East, valued between Rs 10,000 crore and Rs 15,000 crore. The projects include the development of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems and Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), vital for upgrading and linking regional electricity grids in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
L&T will implement +-500kV HVDC transmission links to connect different regions of the national power network, allowing smoother electricity exchange and improving grid reliability. These projects align with Saudi Arabia’s broader goal of modernizing infrastructure and integrating renewable energy sources.
L&T will also execute three additional packages, including two 380kV overhead transmission lines and a 380kV gas-insulated substation, to further strengthen Saudi Arabia’s grid and support renewable energy integration.
In Abu Dhabi, L&T has been contracted to construct two 400kV gas-insulated substations. This work includes installing current-limiting reactors, auto transformers, advanced control systems, and telecommunication integration, all aimed at enhancing grid management and fault detection. These upgrades are expected to significantly boost the power grid’s capacity and efficiency.
