Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced it has secured a major contract with ITER, the international nuclear fusion organization based in France, to implement advanced technologies for assembling intricate components within the ITER Vacuum Vessel at the fusion research facility in Cadarache, southern France. This project represents the world’s largest nuclear fusion initiative.
In an official filing, L&T revealed it has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITER to collaborate on cutting-edge technology solutions for critical fusion hardware. Under this MoU, L&T will work closely with ITER to develop and assemble pioneering fusion systems within the Tokamak’s Vacuum Vessel, designed to sustain and manage plasma operations.
Much of the work will take place directly in the Tokamak pit at ITER’s site. Previously, during the 2020 COVID pandemic, L&T achieved an early delivery of a high-vacuum stainless steel Cryostat vessel for the ITER project, showcasing its manufacturing capabilities.
ITER Director General Pietro Barabaschi stated, “The MoU with L&T reinforces their role as a reliable partner in high-tech manufacturing, essential for ITER’s technological demands. India’s contributions have been instrumental, and we anticipate ongoing cooperation.”
Anil Parab, Whole-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President at L&T, expressed that the collaboration highlights L&T’s expertise in high-tech manufacturing. He added, “Together, L&T and ITER aim to construct the world’s largest Tokamak, validating nuclear fusion as a large-scale, carbon-free energy source inspired by the Sun’s power.”
The company noted that “significant” orders fall between Rs 1,000-2,500 crore, while “large” range from Rs 2,500-5,000 crore, “major” are between Rs 5,000-7,000 crore, and “mega” exceed Rs 7,000 crore.
