Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Friday its partnership with U.S.-based Clean Core Thorium Energy (CCTE) to deliver advanced clean energy solutions worldwide. The collaboration aims to boost nuclear power deployment, particularly in developing nations that require substantial carbon-free electricity to support their growth.
As per a filing with the BSE, it and CCTE have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on deploying CCTE’s patented ANEEL (Advanced Nuclear Energy for Enriched Life) fuel. ANEEL is a unique nuclear fuel that combines thorium and high-assay low-enriched uranium, designed for use in pressurized heavy water reactors like the CANDU (Canadian deuterium-uranium) reactors.
This innovative fuel is expected to lower life-cycle operating costs significantly and cut waste production by more than 85%, while improving safety due to its Accident Tolerant Fuel properties. Additionally, ANEEL fuel promises greater energy security by facilitating large-scale thorium deployment and reducing reliance on uranium.
The company noted that ANEEL fuel promotes clean energy, non-proliferation, enhanced safety, and decarbonization of industries that are challenging to decarbonize, contributing to a circular economy. In response to rising global demand for nuclear energy, L&T is exploring new opportunities to offer comprehensive solutions to its customers.
