Subramanian Sarma, Wholetime Director and President of Energy at L&T, affirmed that small modular reactors (SMRs) fall well within the company’s core capabilities. In a recent interview with businessline, he elaborated on L&T’s interest in SMRs, indicating that the firm is actively engaging with potential technology suppliers to explore various collaborations.

In India, SMRs are referred to as Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs), representing a promising green energy solution that is gaining global attention. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted BSRs in her recent budget speech, noting the government’s intention to collaborate with the private sector in this area.

Several industries, particularly the steel sector, are considering the establishment of SMRs to transition to greener energy sources. L&T has significant experience in the nuclear sector and is skilled in modular construction, having previously built modular structures for oil and gas platforms.

Sarma emphasized that once L&T secures the necessary technology, the company would be well-equipped to handle the manufacturing of reactors and the modularization of the production process. When discussing conversations with technology providers, he mentioned that the discussions involve international companies but are still in very early stages, highlighting the need to identify the most suitable technology.

According to L&T’s annual report for 2023-24, the company’s nuclear product business unit focuses on essential equipment for steam supply systems in nuclear power plants. This unit manufactures critical components of the nuclear island, including steam generators, end shields, pressurizers, safety heat exchangers, and reactor header assemblies.
