The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) has exercised a contract option to acquire three more TPY-4 radars from Lockheed Martin (LM), increasing the total number of these advanced ground-based multi-mission radars to 11. Known as “NATO’s eyes in the north,” the TPY-4 recently passed its Critical Design Review (CDR), confirming the radar’s design meets program requirements.
“Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 radars are critical assets for Norway’s defense, offering the best solution for multi-domain deterrence in the Nordic region,” said Chandra Marshall, Vice President of Radar & Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin. “This additional order and the successful CDR are major milestones, ensuring that Norway’s security needs are met.”
Collaborating with Norwegian Industry
Partnership with Norwegian industry has been a key factor in the development of the TPY-4 program. Lockheed Martin tapped into Norway’s extensive supplier base, particularly Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), to develop this cutting-edge sensor. KDA produced the Platform Electronics System (PES), a crucial component of the TPY-4 that exceeds current long-range surveillance requirements. The Royal Norwegian Air Force will manage and operate the TPY-4 radars as part of the country’s air defense network.
Moving to Production and Testing
The TPY-4 radar system is a state-of-the-art sensor that enhances Norway’s air defense by detecting and tracking aerial threats. The system supports air surveillance, unmanned aerial system (UAS) detection, ballistic missile defense, and air traffic control. With the CDR completed, Lockheed Martin and KDA are now focusing on producing the radars and preparing for the first Factory System Test (FST) set for 2025. The U.S. Air Force has also selected the TPY-4 radar for its Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long Range Radar (3DELRR) program, successfully completing risk reduction testing.
