Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has successfully completed the maiden flight of Bulgaria’s first F-16 Block 70 on October 22. The test flight, held at Lockheed Martin’s Greenville, South Carolina production facility, saw test pilot Charles “Seeker” Hoag perform multiple system checks, confirming the jet’s performance and supersonic capabilities.
This delivery marks Bulgaria as the second European nation to adopt the F-16 Block 70. Bulgaria has ordered a total of 16 F-16s, with the first eight jets contracted in 2019 and an additional eight in 2022. OJ Sanchez, vice president and general manager of the Integrated Fighter Group at Lockheed Martin, commented, “The F-16 Block 70 will enable the Bulgarian Air Force to enhance its border security and strengthen collaborations with U.S., European, and NATO allies.” He added that the F-16’s adaptable design makes it ideal for both air policing and offensive missions, bolstering NATO alliances for years to come.
Globally, the F-16 is operated by 27 countries, with six nations selecting the advanced F-16 Block 70/72 for their air fleets.
