Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has authorized the use of synthetic aviation turbine fuels (SATFs) for the F-35 Lightning II fleet. This decision aims to enhance operational readiness by reducing dependence on traditional fuel supply chains.

Chauncey McIntosh, Vice President and General Manager of the F-35 program, stated, “Lockheed Martin’s priority is ensuring the F-35’s mission readiness for all customers. Expanding fuel options strengthens supply chain resilience while maintaining top-tier performance. As the backbone of allied air dominance, the F-35 will remain a critical asset for decades.”

The approval permits F-35 aircraft to utilize fuel blends containing up to 50% SATFs combined with conventional jet fuel, depending on the production method and raw materials used. Lockheed Martin conducted rigorous technical assessments to confirm that SATFs meet the stringent performance and reliability standards required for the F-35’s demanding missions. This step aligns with the Department of Defense’s objectives for energy diversification and enhances operational flexibility and energy security.

Synthetic aviation turbine fuels are created from a range of sources, including fossil-based materials like coal and natural gas, as well as renewable options such as waste oils and agricultural residues. These fuels offer a sustainable alternative while ensuring performance compatibility for advanced military aircraft like the F-35.

Currently, more than 1,100 F-35 jets are operational across 33 bases worldwide, serving 10 nations on home soil. With over 971,700 flight hours logged, the F-35 remains a cornerstone of air dominance, supporting allied forces as older aircraft retire and adversaries advance their capabilities.
