Lockheed Martin announced on Tuesday that it has entered into a partnership with General Dynamics to produce solid rocket motors, which are essential for missile propulsion. This move comes as demand for missiles surges, driven by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as efforts to replenish U.S. military stockpiles.
General Dynamics will begin manufacturing these solid rocket motors at its Camden, Arkansas facility starting in 2025. These motors will be used in the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), which Lockheed Martin produces. Lockheed Martin is set to increase its GMLRS deliveries from 10,000 units in 2024 to 14,000 in 2025.
Rocket motors, which are crucial yet relatively low-cost components, have historically been supplied by Northrop and L3Harris Technologies. However, the Pentagon has shown interest in expanding its supplier network and has been exploring options with emerging companies like Ursa Major, a startup in the rocket manufacturing industry.
