On Tuesday, Lenovo announced the expansion of its AI operations in India with the commencement of AI server manufacturing and the opening of a new Research & Development (R&D) lab. These initiatives align with the country’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘AI for All’ strategies, showcasing Lenovo’s growing dedication to India as a hub for tech innovation and production.
The company, which has been manufacturing in India for nearly two decades, revealed that its Puducherry plant will now produce AI servers, while the newly established R&D lab in Bengaluru will focus on developing advanced server technologies.
The Puducherry facility will manufacture enterprise AI and GPU servers specifically designed for AI-related tasks, meeting the rising demand for AI infrastructure both domestically and internationally. Over 60% of the plant’s output will be earmarked for export across the Asia-Pacific region. The facility is set to produce 50,000 AI servers and 2,400 high-end GPU units annually, enhancing Lenovo’s AI solutions supply chain.
“This is a significant step towards achieving Lenovo’s and India’s ‘AI for All’ vision,” stated Amar Babu, President of Lenovo Asia Pacific. “We are committed to strengthening India’s role in global tech innovation and manufacturing.” Alongside the AI server production, it’s new R&D lab in Bengaluru will develop and test new server platforms, including hardware, firmware, and software. This lab will join Lenovo’s global R&D network, which already includes facilities in the United States, China, and Taiwan.
Shailendra Katyal, Managing Director of Lenovo India, highlighted the company’s long-term investment in AI server manufacturing and R&D in the country. “This new lab underscores our dedication to producing cutting-edge technologies ‘in India for the world,’” he said. The lab will focus on mainstream server designs and other technological advancements, thereby enhancing Lenovo’s research capabilities worldwide.
The company has been manufacturing in India since 2005, producing over seven million devices in the past year alone. The company’s latest AI initiatives aim to deepen its investment in the country, positioning India as a key player in global technology and AI solutions.
