Leanbio is an industry leading contract development and manufacturing organization operating from Barcelona has expertise in design and process optimization for developing biological medicines. The development cycle of the company is supported through strain and cell line, process and analytical development, and manufacturing.
A number of international pharmaceutical as well as biotech companies work with Leanbio to develop and scale-up their biologics manufacturing process. Different products, produced over a wide range which require versatile equipment to prevent cross contamination are manufactured using the pilot plant. WMFTG offered an all-round solution in form of their peristaltic pumps to reduce cleaning requirements while still fending off contamination of product and making reconfiguration between batches possible.
The entire Leanbio team was familiar with the work done by Watson Marlow, as their products had great reputation. Leanbio had previously used WMFTG’s 114 pump heads for integrating in their Bionet reactors and had a hands-on experience of the quality of WMFTG products.
On the basis of these experiences, it became an easy choice for Leanbio to partner with WMFTG. Leanbio chose the 630S/R pump series as manual control pump as it offers flow rates up to 16 L/min at 2 bar pressure. This specific pump was chosen as it satisfied the plant’s requirement.

To attain the previously mentioned objectives, Leanbio has been promoting “lean bioproduction”, a core part of this approach is based on the concept ‘Quality by design’. It is a way of developing most efficient process to optimize the biopharmaceutical production for their customers.
Here, WMFTG pumps known for their quality, reliability and long life contributes to the sustainability goals set by Leanbio. As WMFTG pumps have long life, the need for its periodic replacement is greatly reduced which minimizes the down time as well as the operational cost.
Leanbio also required an easy to install compatible tubing along with the peristaltic pump to minimize contamination and facilitate process validation. WMFTG’s area of expertise covers the entire fluid management domain which enables them to provide a suitable tubing for the 630S/R series pumps. Additionally, the pump has retractable rollers for easy loading of tubes, this also simplifies the changeover process between the products.
Leanbio currently has kept the pump under a trial process in range of cleanroom filtration and fluid transfer applications. Following splendid results combined with further evidence of its reliability and ease of use, Leanbio is delighted to expand the scope of collaboration with WMFTG for other processes as well.
