Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that land acquisition for a large-scale steel plant in Keonjhar district will commence shortly. The company behind the project has already deposited the necessary funds to initiate the process, signaling progress toward the region’s long-awaited industrial development.
The upcoming steel plant is a joint initiative between India’s JSW Group and South Korea’s POSCO, with an estimated investment of over ₹40,000 crore. The first phase of the project is planned to have a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Two potential sites have been identified for the facility—one near Taramakant and the other at Patna in Keonjhar district.
During his visit to the district, the Chief Minister stated that the project would play a transformative role in boosting the local economy and creating employment opportunities for youth. He emphasized that Keonjhar, though rich in minerals, has historically lacked large-scale industrial development—something this project aims to change.
Shri Majhi chaired a high-level review meeting during his visit, engaging with local legislators and officials to ensure smooth coordination on various infrastructure and development projects, including the expansion of national highways in the region. He also flagged off three ambulances and launched a special vehicle for collecting coconuts offered to Maa Tarini, a local religious tradition tied to the famous temple in Ghatagaon. The Chief Minister affirmed the state’s commitment to funding and supporting the holistic development of Keonjhar district.
