Semiconductor equipment giant Lam Research is set to invest ₹10,000 crore in India, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday. The company, which inaugurated its India Center for Engineering in Bengaluru in September 2022, began expanding the facility last year to strengthen its presence in the country.

“Another significant step in India’s semiconductor growth—Lam Research commits over ₹10,000 crore to India. A strong endorsement of PM @narendramodi Ji’s vision for the semiconductor industry,” Vaishnaw shared on social media platform X. Additionally, in April 2024, Lam Research pledged ₹241 crore in software licenses over the next two years, benefiting 2,800 students as part of its collaboration with the India Semiconductor Mission.

Lam Research has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Karnataka government to lease and eventually purchase land in Whitefield, Bengaluru, according to India General Manager Rangesh Raghavan. In a LinkedIn post, he highlighted the company’s commitment to expanding its supply chain in India, a decision announced in July 2024.

Significant progress has already been made, with several custom parts and high-precision components from Indian suppliers successfully passing Lam’s qualification cycle. Plans are in place to further scale India’s supply chain operations over the coming years to strengthen global supply chain resilience.

Meanwhile, the Indian Semiconductor Mission has approved five projects under its ₹76,000 crore initiative, including Micron Technology’s ATMP plant in Sanand. Additionally, Tata Electronics, in collaboration with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), is setting up India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, with a total investment of ₹91,000 crore. These developments mark a significant step in India’s efforts to establish itself as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
