L&T has installed its inaugural domestically produced electrolyser at the Green Hydrogen Plant. Situated within the AM Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, this achievement marks the entry of L&T Electrolysers Limited into the domestic electrolyser manufacturing sector.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is a leading Indian multinational conglomerate with a presence in over 30 countries. Established in 1938, the company has grown to become one of the largest and most respected companies in India, with a focus on engineering, construction, manufacturing, and technology.
The company’s diverse portfolio includes infrastructure projects, heavy engineering, defense, aerospace, and technology services. The company is known for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. With a strong track record of delivering world-class projects, it continues to be a key player in India’s growth story.
A cutting-edge electrolyser boasting a 1 MW rated power capacity (with the potential to scale up to 2 MW) has been unveiled. This advanced system is capable of generating 200 Nm3/Hr of hydrogen and features dual stacks along with an Electrolyser Processing Unit (EPU) ML-400. Notably, the EPU is locally produced and assembled, adhering to the latest global standards, ensuring outstanding flexibility and thermal stability.
The electrolyser is now poised to undergo comprehensive testing in the coming weeks to enhance its performance, a move expected to pave the way for large-scale manufacturing of such devices. L&T Electrolysers Limited, a newly established arm of L&T, is dedicated to producing pressurized alkaline electrolysers using technology from McPhy Energy, France.
This initiative marks a significant stride in the “Make in India” campaign, with L&T Electrolysers leading the entire value chain, from engineering to manufacturing, in collaboration with local Indian vendors and suppliers. The company aims to capitalize on its forthcoming giga-scale facility in Hazira to cater to the increasing demand for green hydrogen. This effort includes maximizing product localization through a robust local supply chain and implementing automation for enhanced cost-competitiveness.
Subramanian Sarma, the Whole-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Energy) at L&T, hailed the introduction of their domestically produced electrolyser as a monumental stride towards sustainable energy. Asserting their position not just within the Indian market but on a global scale, Sarma emphasized L&T’s pivotal role in spearheading clean energy initiatives.
Derek M Shah, Senior Vice President and Head of the Green Energy Business at L&T, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader impact of localizing production beyond mere financial gains. Emphasizing the empowerment of the Indian supply chain and the creation of opportunities for skilled professionals, Shah underscored the synergy between L&T’s efforts and the vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
L&T Electrolysers’ significant allocation of 300 MW/annum capacity under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, facilitated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and executed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), further cements their potential to emerge as a prominent player in electrolyser manufacturing.
