Kollmorgen Corporation, a global leader in motion control and automation systems, has expanded its IC Ironcore DDL motor family to support 400/480 VAC-powered applications, in addition to its previous 230 VAC offerings. The new direct drive linear motor from Kollmorgen provides a continuous force range of up to 8,211 N, with peak forces reaching 13,448 N. When powered at higher bus voltages, the motor can deliver its rated force at increased speeds, making it ideal for applications requiring rapid and precise movement of heavy loads, such as machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing, battery production, and industrial automation.
In environments with 400 or 480 VAC bus voltages, the IC Ironcore DDL motor may eliminate the need for a transformer typically required for motors with lower voltage ratings. Additionally, operating at higher voltages enables the motor to perform the same amount of work at a lower amperage, potentially allowing for smaller drive amplifiers and lighter cables. This reduced current draw in high-voltage settings can help machine builders use smaller control cabinets with lower cooling requirements.
The IC Ironcore DDL motor also offers a water-cooling option that boosts continuous force output by 40-60%, potentially enabling the use of a smaller motor size. These advantages support more compact, lightweight, and sustainable machine designs that are simpler to build, more affordable, and offer greater value to both OEMs and their customers.
The IC Ironcore DDL motor offers OEMs the ability to serve global markets without significant redesigns. Its 230/400/480 VAC bus voltage compatibility meets the needs of customers across North America, Europe, and Asia. Additionally, the motor is UL and CE certified, as well as RoHS and REACH compliant, simplifying the approval process for global sales.
This motor joins Kollmorgen’s comprehensive portfolio of direct drive linear motors, which also includes the ICD Ironcore Low Profile DDL and the IL Ironless DDL. When paired with AKD® or AKD2G servo drives, these motors provide exceptional precision, smoothness, and reliability for demanding applications. AKD2G dual-axis servo drives can even synchronize two motors, for example, in an x/y table application, while optimizing space in the control cabinet.
“We’re excited to significantly expand the range, power, and versatility of our direct drive linear motor portfolio with the addition of the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL,” said Chris Cooper, senior director of product management. “This latest product enables machine builders to reach new levels of linear motion performance, differentiating their designs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.”
