Kollmorgen Expands Functional Safety with Upgraded SafeMotion™ Monitor

Kollmorgen

Kollmorgen, a leader in motion control systems, has announced the release of the updated SafeMotion™ Monitor (SMM) firmware, version SMM2.0. This upgrade broadens functional safety capabilities, supporting a wider range of encoders and motors, including those used in applications such as material forming, multi-axis measurement, food processing, and packaging.

Initially designed for the 2G Motion System, SMM2.0 is now compatible with any motor featuring a HIPERFACE-DSL rotary-safe feedback system. This expansion includes the AKM2G and AKMA motor lines, which now offer more feedback system options.

Additionally, SMM2.0 introduces a second instance of Safe Operating Stop (SOS), providing enhanced design flexibility. In response to updated EU regulations on functional safety, SMM2.0 simplifies compliance by offering 16 integrated safety features, such as SafePosition, SafeStop, and SafeSpeed.

“With the growing demand for functional safety, our goal is to make it easier for customers to incorporate these capabilities into their machine designs,” said Christopher Cooper, Product Management Senior Director. “SMM2.0 delivers drive-integrated functional safety for a broader range of motors, meeting the needs of even the most demanding applications.”

As part of Regal Rexnord, Kollmorgen leverages over a century of expertise in developing high-performance motors, drives, AGV control solutions, and automation platforms. The company continues to provide innovative, reliable solutions that offer exceptional performance and a competitive edge for machine builders.
