KJ Somaiya Private Industrial Training Institute, in association with the Institute of Packaging Machinery Manufacturers of India (IPMMI), officially launched a Certificate Course in Packaging Machinery Operation and Maintenance on 1st July 2025. The program also saw the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Electronic Mechanic Laboratory, signaling a firm push toward aligning vocational education with the evolving needs of the manufacturing sector.
The ceremony was attended by key dignitaries including Shaji Mathew, Principal of KJ Somaiya Private ITI; Mahadevan Iyer, President of IPMMI; Vivek Chinoy, Vice President of IPMMI; and Retired Lt Gen HS Kahlon, Secretary of the Somaiya Group. The first batch, consisting of 24 students, was fully enrolled—prompting plans to begin a second intake in January 2026.
The course is backed by leading companies in the packaging industry that have contributed essential lab equipment and infrastructure. Support has come from IMA PG India, Kenray Forming India LLP, Electronic Devices Worldwide, Techno Shell Automation, Infinity Automated Solutions Pvt Ltd., and others. Students will benefit from hands-on training with tools and systems like the Omron automation kit, Festo automation setup, Thames Side sensors, Valco Melton training modules, and induction sealing machines, among others.
Speaking at the event, Lt Gen HS Kahlon highlighted the importance of bridging the skills gap: “This initiative reflects our commitment to building meaningful partnerships that shape society. By working with industry, we aim to bring relevant, job-ready training to students.”
Mahadevan Iyer of IPMMI underscored the industry’s need for trained personnel: “There’s a growing demand for skilled technicians in packaging machinery. Through this program, we’re creating a pipeline of talent equipped with practical experience.”
