KhushTech Korea Co Ltd is set to introduce India’s first Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) feature phone, branded under FreeStream Technologies — a company spun out of IIT Kanpur. This budget-friendly device is the first of its kind globally and is equipped with the Tejas Networks SL-3000 D2M chip, designed to operate on the 470–608 MHz frequency band.
The phone delivers live video, audio, text, and emergency alerts directly to users — all without the need for internet or mobile data, using over-the-air broadcast signals. This is made possible through the ATSC 3.0 technology standard, which allows mass delivery of digital content straight to mobile phones.
During a recent meeting with Andhra Pradesh IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh, KhushTech’s CEO Eric Shin presented the new phone and demonstrated its ability to deliver educational and public content reliably in areas with limited connectivity. The launch is supported by Tejas Networks and Sinclair Inc (USA), both of which have played key roles in building the device and the wider D2M infrastructure. Trials have been underway in partnership with Prasar Bharati, IIT Kanpur, and Tejas Networks, focusing on the rollout of this technology across India.
Sumeet Nindrajog, Director of FreeStream Technologies, said, “This affordable phone will be a game-changer for millions across India and beyond. We are committed to building a strong D2M ecosystem as part of the Digital Bharat mission.” Eric Shin added, “Our D2M phone is not only the first in the world but also the first to receive BIS certification in India. We’re committed to supporting local manufacturing and will invest in setting up a facility in Andhra Pradesh as part of the ‘Make in India’ vision.”
Parag Naik of Tejas Networks noted, “We’ve optimized the chip and software stack to run smoothly even in the limited environment of a basic phone. This complete solution helps us rapidly test and scale D2M.” Chris Ripley, CEO of Sinclair Inc, praised KhushTech’s efforts in creating affordable devices for wide adoption, calling the launch a step toward a “Broadcast to Everything” future that will enable new apps for multiple sectors in India.
Founded at IIT Kanpur, FreeStream is India’s first startup focused on full-stack D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) solutions — from chip design to nationwide broadcast platform management. KhushTech Korea develops cutting-edge products in the D2M and display technology space. The company has created the world’s first D2M feature phone and also produces AI-enabled display devices like laptops and tablets.
Tejas Networks designs and builds advanced telecom equipment for clients in over 75 countries. Part of the Tata Group, the company supports a wide range of technologies including 4G/5G, optical transport, and D2M broadcasting.
