Kennametal Inc. (NYSE: KMT) is expanding its turning product line with the launch of new inserts and cutting tools that enhance its capabilities in small parts and medical machining. The three new additions—TopSwiss™ Turning Inserts, Micro Boring Solid (MBS) tooling, and KCU25B Turning Inserts—are engineered to boost productivity, improve component quality, minimize errors, and help customers achieve precise and clean machining results.

“These new products reinforce our legacy of high-performance turning solutions and reflect our goal to be a comprehensive resource for customers worldwide,” stated Scott Etling, Vice President of Global Product Management. “The KCU25B and TopSwiss products exemplify our commitment to innovation and the advancement of our turning solutions lineup.”

The TopSwiss™ Turning Inserts are specifically designed for Swiss-type small parts machining, optimized for applications requiring low feed rates and high depth of cut, catering to the medical, aerospace, defense, general engineering, and transportation sectors. Key features include:

  • Four new carbide grades, one new cermet grade, and seven new geometries.
  • Straight and curved cutting edges for stable operations and smooth chip flow in low feed, high depth-of-cut scenarios.
  • Polished finishing geometries that enhance welding resistance and improve surface finishes.
  • Medium and finishing wiper geometries for higher feed rates and superior surface quality.
  • Various geometries equipped with high chip breaker walls and large pockets for effective chip evacuation.

The new Micro Boring Solid (MBS) tooling introduces versatility for machining smaller applications, offering sharp cutting edges, reduced cutting forces, and excellent chip evacuation for longer tool life and superior surface finishes. The latest TopSwiss lineup includes internal turning capabilities for bores as small as Ø0.3mm (0.012″) and precision-ground insert shanks that ensure high accuracy and stability, featuring over 1,100 standard items for diverse applications.

“We are excited to enhance the TopSwiss platform with smaller tooling options tailored for intricate machining tasks while ensuring reliability and consistency for lights-out operations,” remarked Etling. Additionally, the KCU25B Turning Inserts provide a robust solution for roughing and medium machining in industries such as aerospace, defense, energy, general engineering, and transportation, suitable for various materials including steels, stainless steels, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys. Ideal for common turning, grooving, and cut-off tasks, KCU25B inserts feature Kennametal’s proprietary KENGold PVD coating, which offers enhanced protection against flank wear and chipping.
