Keltron Component Complex Limited or KCCL has taken a significant step toward becoming a globally recognized manufacturer of electronic components by establishing India’s inaugural super-capacitor production facility in Kannur. This groundbreaking initiative marks a pivotal moment in India’s manufacturing landscape and aims to enhance the country’s position in the global electronics sector.
The first phase of this ambitious ₹42-crore project has recently been completed, with an investment of ₹18 crore. This initial phase incorporates vital infrastructure, including dry rooms and advanced production facilities designed to produce 2,100 super-capacitors per day. The project has been undertaken in collaboration with the ISRO, reflecting a strong partnership aimed at advancing technology and manufacturing capabilities in India.
During the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the state government’s commitment to further bolster this initiative with an additional investment of ₹1,000 crore. This substantial financial backing aims to position Kerala as a significant hub for electronic equipment manufacturing. The Chief Minister emphasized the necessity of enhancing productivity and modernizing existing manufacturing units to realize this vision fully.
KCCL, as India’s pioneering electronic equipment manufacturing unit, is expected to play a crucial role in this transformative journey. To support the modernization of Keltron, the state government has unveiled a comprehensive ₹395 crore master plan. This plan includes initiatives to revamp the Karakulam unit of the company, focusing on the production of power electronics products. Moreover, the government has proposed the establishment of an IT corridor that will connect various national highways, facilitating the movement of goods and resources across the region.
There are also plans to set up an electronics hardware manufacturing facility at Amballur in Ernakulam, further contributing to the development of an integrated electronic components ecosystem that benefits existing manufacturing companies. Once the super-capacitor production facility is fully operational, it is anticipated to generate an impressive annual turnover of ₹22 crore and a profit of ₹3 crore by the end of its fourth year of operation.
This initiative positions KCCL as a prominent player in the global electronics components market, paving the way for enhanced competitiveness and innovation. Super-capacitors, which boast significantly higher capacitance than traditional capacitors but come with lower voltage limits, have become essential in various applications. They can store up to 100 times more energy per unit of volume or mass compared to electrolytic capacitors, making them invaluable across numerous industries.
The transportation, consumer electronics, renewable energy, defense equipment, space launch vehicles, and industrial sectors stand to gain immensely from this technology. As KCCL moves forward with this cutting-edge facility, it not only aims to fulfill domestic demands but also aspires to meet the growing global needs for super-capacitors, reinforcing India’s position in the global manufacturing landscape.
