Kaynes Technology India, a prominent player in electronics manufacturing services (EMS), is advancing its capabilities with a strategic push into the semiconductor industry. This move aims to establish the company as a fully integrated entity in the electronics sector.
Jairam Sampat, Whole-Time Director and CFO of Kaynes Technology, emphasized the importance of evolving beyond assembly operations. “To achieve our growth aspirations and meet stakeholder expectations, we need to deepen our technological expertise,” he stated.
As part of this initiative, Kaynes is setting up a semiconductor manufacturing facility. Sampat outlined the roadmap: “We are currently building the infrastructure for our semiconductor factory. By early next year, we aim to complete proof-of-concept trials, with commercial production expected to begin by the January-March period.”
Despite challenges in India’s export sector, electronics manufacturing has emerged as a bright spot, driven by rising demand and government incentives. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is reportedly seeking cabinet approval for a ₹40,000 crore incentive package to boost the domestic production of non-semiconductor electronic components. Sampat commented, “While details are awaited, this initiative is expected to support component manufacturers, enabling them to cater to EMS players across the country.”
Kaynes is also advancing projects in high-density printed circuit board (PC board) fabrication, which could benefit from these upcoming policies. The company has launched two major initiatives: an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) project and a PC board manufacturing facility. Additionally, Kaynes is exploring module-related opportunities to diversify its portfolio.
Reports suggest that the government aims to increase local value addition in electronic components manufacturing from the current 15-18% to 35-40% over the next five years, starting April 2025. With its expansion plans, Kaynes Technology is well-positioned to contribute to and benefit from this transformative phase in India’s electronics industry.
