Jupiter Wagons, a key player in mobility solutions, announced on Tuesday that its subsidiary, Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory, plans to set up a new plant in Odisha. The facility, which involves an investment of approximately ₹2,500 crore, will produce forged wheelsets. This new plant will significantly increase the subsidiary’s annual production capacity from 20,000 to 100,000 forged wheelsets.
The facility is expected to be fully operational by 2027, as per the company’s stock exchange filing. Upon completion, the plant will cater to both domestic and international markets, with around 50% of its capacity dedicated to exports.
The primary export partners include Tatravagonka A.S. and other European clients. This expansion aligns with the company’s strategy to support the “Make in India” initiative, aiming to enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities and strengthen its position in the global supply chain.
Commenting on the development, Managing Director Vivek Lohia said, “We are excited to announce the transformation of our subsidiary, now named Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Ltd. The investment in this new facility, equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, will drive growth and efficiency.” He emphasized that this move reflects the company’s commitment to a more sustainable, efficient, and globally competitive rail infrastructure manufacturing industry in India.
Jupiter Wagons, part of the Kolkata-based Jupiter Group, had acquired Bonatrans India, Europe’s leading wheelset producer, in the last fiscal year, making it the first rolling stock manufacturer in India to have its own wheel plant.
The company noted that the acquisition leverages advanced technology for scalable product development, reducing dependency on imports. Jupiter Wagons continues to be a major player in the Indian railway wagon manufacturing sector, with a diversified portfolio that includes braking systems, rolling stock components, and custom load bodies for commercial vehicles.
