Jupiter Wagons Limited, a leading manufacturer of railway wagons, components, and castings, announced on April 3 that its subsidiary, Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Private Ltd (JTRF), has secured land in Haldiapada, Khordha, Odisha, for the establishment of India’s first private-sector railwheel and axle forging plant. This major development underscores Odisha’s growing role as a center for high-tech industrial manufacturing and marks the region’s first private railway heavy engineering venture.
The company plans to invest ₹2,500 crore in phases to develop this advanced facility. Once operational, the plant will produce 100,000 forged wheelsets annually, serving both domestic and international markets. Nearly 50% of production will be designated for export, primarily to Tatravagonka A.S., a leading Slovakian rail infrastructure company, as well as other European clients. This initiative is part of the “Invest Odisha” program, facilitated by Invest India, and is located on land obtained from the IDCO land bank, with all necessary environmental and statutory clearances in place.
The plant, expected to begin operations by 2027, will play a pivotal role in enhancing India’s railway manufacturing capabilities while supporting the country’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The facility is also set to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the Odisha plant will cater to the growing demand for high-speed and high-load railway components. By manufacturing these critical components domestically, Jupiter Tatravagonka will reduce India’s reliance on imports and expand its global presence, particularly in the European market.
