Jupiter Wagons Limited (JWL), a leading manufacturer of advanced mobility solutions for rail, road, and marine transport, has secured a ₹242.41 crore contract from GATX India Private Limited, the country’s largest private railcar lessor. The order covers the production and delivery of 583 high-performance wagons designed to meet the diverse needs of modern freight operations.
The recently awarded contract encompasses the manufacturing and supply of four distinct types of specialised wagons, each designed to meet specific operational needs within the freight transport sector. These wagons combine engineering precision with purpose-driven design to ensure optimal performance across varied cargo categories.
The BLSS (Container Carrier Wagon) is tailored for the movement of ISO containers. Built with a high axle load capacity and an enhanced payload-to-tare ratio, this design ensures that more cargo can be moved efficiently in each trip. Its configuration supports smooth intermodal transport, improving turnaround times and strengthening connectivity between ports and inland destinations.
The ACT2 (Bi-Level SUV Carrier Wagon) is engineered for the secure and efficient transport of finished passenger vehicles, particularly SUVs. Each wagon can accommodate up to 10 SUVs, reducing the number of trips required for bulk shipments. Its bi-level structure ensures minimal handling, greater vehicle protection during transit, and faster loading and unloading cycles, aligning with the growing demand in India’s automotive sector.
The BOXNHL (High-Capacity Open Wagon) is optimised for the movement of heavy bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore. Featuring open tops for tippler unloading, these wagons boast a payload capacity exceeding 70 tonnes. Upgraded brake systems and enhanced speed potential make them ideally suited for heavy-haul freight corridors, where reliability and efficiency are paramount.
Finally, the BVCM (Specialised Freight Wagon) is designed for niche cargo requirements. Built to adapt to specific freight demands, this wagon type addresses the evolving needs of modern logistics, providing tailored solutions for specialised industries. Its flexible configuration ensures that it can be deployed for diverse and challenging freight applications, adding versatility to the fleet’s operational capabilities.
These wagons combine robust construction with operational efficiency, enabling GATX to enhance cargo handling capacity and optimise long-distance logistics. Speaking on the order, Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of JWL, said “We value our continued collaboration with GATX India. This significant order not only reinforces our position in the specialised freight segment but also supports our strategy of diversifying our customer base while delivering innovative, high-quality solutions.”
JWL will execute the project from its modern manufacturing facilities across India, leveraging deep engineering expertise, integrated design, and strong backward linkages to ensure timely delivery and stringent quality compliance. JWL offers a broad spectrum of mobility solutions, including freight wagons, locomotives, passenger coach accessories, braking systems, commercial vehicles, ISO marine containers, and advanced components such as couplers, bogies, wheels, axles, and lithium-ion battery systems.
